My son is going to be 2. A few weeks ago, we bought a potty chair. I didn't push too hard. He finally decided to sit on the big potty. He went pee 3 times and seemed excited. Then, that was it. He refuses to even sit at all any more. I've tried offering one M&M each time he does, but it doesn't work. I've tried praising him and just letting him follow us into the bathroom, but NOTHING works. Any suggestions?

When we were working on potty training our now five year old my mother told me not to push it and that it will just happen. After much wasted effort on our part she was right. One day it just clicked with him. Now, getting him to actually pee IN the toilet and not just in the general area of the toilet is our issue.

I introduced the potty to my son when he was about 18 months old. He was all for it at the time and like your son he went a few times at the beginning and was thrilled. But then he decided he wanted nothing to do with it. If I asked him to try it he would refuse. After a few months we progressed to just sitting on the potty for a while but he never went. As soon as he would get up and start playing he would go. I didn't push it on him at all; I didn't want him to be frightened to go on the potty. When he was about 2 yrs and 3 months I took the potty from the bathroom and put it in the living room in front of the TV. I know it sounds funny but I would let him sit on it and watch TV for as long as he wanted. He would eventually go without realizing it but when he was finished we would have our own little celebration. As he got more comfortable with using it I would move it closer and closer back into the bathroom. Now he goes to the bathroom to potty on his own in his big boy potty. The funny thing is that he refuses to go #2 on the little potty. He will only go on the big potty for that, which I am thankful for now.
Good luck! Every child is different and will start when they feel ready. There really is no rush!!

Our son is a little over 2. We have a little potty chair that looks like a frog. He like to sit on it fully clothed, and sometimes he'll say he wants to go sit on the potty. But by the time we get in there, and take his pants off, the mood has passed. He was really interested in it for a while, but then he got very sick and spent a couple nights in the hospital. After they tried to straight cath him for a urine sample, it was very painful to pee. That was a month ago, and the pain is gone, but now we are dealing with a really big set back. He wants nothing to do with the potty. How long is this going to last???
