How to Help Kids Prepare Emotionally for the Transition from High School to College with Amy McGrath

The transition from high school to college can be difficult for some students. Here to talk about that is Amy McGrath. Amy is the Vice President of Educational Outreach and Student Services for Arizona State University and the Managing Director the ASU Preparatory Academy, which is a network of public charter schools sponsored by ASU. Starting now, Talking About Kids will be dedicating one episode a month to supporting the formation and coordination of adolescent-centered care and services. We will be using Arizona Alliance for Adolescent Health as a model, so, once a month you will also hear Vinny Chulani and Beheir Thompson participate in the discussion and share information about Arizona Alliance for Adolescent Health’s activities and resources. Biography of Amy McGrath


Amy McGrath is a Vice President of Educational Outreach and Student Services for Arizona State University and the Managing Director of ASU Preparatory Academy, a network of public charter schools sponsored by Arizona State University. With over 15 years of experience exploring innovation and personalized learning, she has a rich background which ranges from school design, standing up new models of education for all students, and education policy.


Amy has worked and advocated at both the state and national level and writes extensively on innovation and its relationship to opportunity. She has worked with international school leaders to understand blended learning, and, at Florida Virtual School, she was charged with testing, developing and scaling up educational technology products for the school’s six hundred thousand learners. She sits on the board for the World Series of Entrepreneurship and Trace Academy and is passionate about redesigning the student experience from the inside out to impact academic achievement for all learners.


Amy is a University of South Florida graduate with a Bachelor’s in Social Science Education and a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership. She is happily married with 3 children who keep her weekends eventful on the side-line of a soccer field.



Biography of Beheir Thompson


Beheir Thompson (she/her) serves as Adolescent Health Program Coordinator for Affirm. Primarily, she works to include and uplift youth voice to ensure healthcare and social service spaces are welcoming, safe, and informed by the young people they serve. She has a background in Public Health, specifically, human growth and development, healthy weight, and behavioral health initiatives. She believes in the power of lived experiences and storytelling and uses this to inform her work and daily life. Beheir has been dedicated to improving the lives of children and families for over 10 years. She is passionate about creating spaces where folks feel a sense of safety and belonging, to build and sustain healthy relationships.



Biography of Veenod Chulani


Dr. Chulani is Section Chief of Adolescent Medicine at Phoenix Children’s Hospital and Clinical Professor of Pediatrics in the University of Arizona -Phoenix Department of Child Health. He is also a founding member and clinical consultant to the Arizona Alliance for Adolescent Health. He completed his pediatric residency training at Maimonides Medical Center, Brooklyn, New York; his fellowship in Adolescent Medicine at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles; and, his Master’s in Education from the University of Southern California-Keck School of Medicine. His clinical and research interests include adolescent sexual and reproductive health, the care of gay, lesbian, bisexual transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) youth, health equity promotion and diversity and inclusion. He has lectured nationally and internationally on a host of topics related to Adolescent Medicine. He has delivered lectures and workshops nationally and internationally and is the recipient of numerous awards recognizing his contribution to adolescent health.
